Clarkson Connections: "Conservation Efforts for Threatened Blanding's Turtles in Northern NY"

Saturday, May 11, 2019 - 5:30pm to 7:30pm

Minna Anthony Common Nature Center

Join Dr. Glenn Johnson, Biology Professor at SUNY Potsdam, for a program on the conservation of the NYS Threatened Blanding’s Turtle.

Since 1998, Dr. Johnson, his students, and colleagues at the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, and Clarkson University have been actively involved in learning more about this species and seeking ways to reduce mortality so that their populations remain sustainable in our region. Dr. Johnson will discuss these efforts and talk about all the kinds of turtles found in northern New York and will have some live specimens on hand as well.

This species of semi aquatic turtle prefers shrubby wetlands for both foraging for food and overwintering. Adults do not start breeding until they are almost 20 years old and females often travel great distances to their favorite nesting areas which consist of sandy soils with little vegetation and good sun exposure.

While their wetland habitats are largely protected today, the need to move about the landscape for nesting and dispersal puts them at great risk as they cross roads to reach these sites.

Dr. Johnson ’s seminar is part of our five-part series featuring Clarkson faculty or affiliates. Each seminar will last approximately one hour with time before and after for refreshments and talking with the featured speaker. Email TILT or Stephanie Kring ([email protected]) with any questions.

Let us know you're coming by calling the TILT office at 315-686-5345, emailing [email protected], or registering here. Walk-ins welcomed!
