It is with a heavy heart that TILT notes the passing of Mabel Walker.
Mabel and her husband T. Urling (Tom) Walker became members of the Thousand Islands Land Trust (TILT) in 2008. As well-known North Country philanthropists, they played an integral role in the development of TILT’s Otter Creek Nature Trail in Alexandria Bay. Walking distance from Alexandria Bay Central School and the center of the Village, the Otter Creek Nature Trail has become a favorite for hikers, bird watchers, outdoor enthusiasts, and countless parents looking to get their kids out in nature.
In 2016, Mabel and Tom were honored by the dedication of the Walker Suspension Bridge at the Otter Creek Northern Loop or Bridge Trail. This unique feature provides picturesque views of Lynch Creek. Without their support and generosity, this project would not have been possible. In addition, Mabel and Tom generously supported the many outdoor educational activities hosted at Zenda Farms Preserve.
Mabel’s immeasurable dedication to our beloved Northern New York communities and Thousand Islands region will be forever celebrated. The TILT Staff and Board extends their sincerest sympathy to the Walker Family.
Donations in Mabel’s memory may be made to the Hospice of Jefferson County, 1398 Gotham St, Watertown, NY 13601, or to the Walker Family Community Fund at the Northern New York Community Foundation, 131 Washington St., Watertown, NY 13601.
