Tern Grid Installation

Eagle Wings Shoals

Installing the tern grid is a great volunteer opportunity!

Each year, TILT and Save The River install a gull exclusion grid on some of the Eagle Wings shoals between Calumet and Grindstone. The grid is made of filament and wire and creates a barrier to large predatory birds like gulls, while allowing the smaller terns through to their natural nesting habitat on the rocks. Who would imagine that a rocky surface was a good place to lay an egg?!

We install the grid sometime in the week of April 18, depending on weather. If you'd like to help, please sign up in advance and be sure to give us your telephone number, so we can confirm the specifics in the previous week.
