Job Description: 

The Summer Land Steward assists TILT trustees and staff to better serve its mission. During summer months, TILT expands its property management on wildlife preserves, conservation easements, and recreational facilities and trails. The Summer Land Steward’s responsibilities include; assisting staff with conservation easement management; helping steward and manage all TILT owned recreational facilities and trails; assisting with outreach through TILTreks programs and summer events; and office support. Summer staff has the opportunity to learn about the workings of a land trust, become familiar with local ecology, and gain experience in land stewardship and management techniques.

The Summer Land Steward of the Thousand Islands Land Trust (TILT) is an hourly, seasonal paid position that reports to the Stewardship Director. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following –

 

Primary Responsibilities:

I. Land Management/Stewardship

  1. Assist TILT staff with the stewardship and management of fee-owned preserve and conservation easement files and research
  2. Assist with all aspects of summer outreach through TILTreks and TILTalks
  3. Assist in the conservation easement annual stewardship and monitoring
  4. Work with staff and volunteers on preserve and trail maintenance projects; marking of preserve boundaries and trails
  5. Monitor fee-owned preserves and structures for use

II. Land Conservation

  1. Provide support for baseline reports /management plans, data collection and assembly
  2. Provide office administration support
  3. Write news releases and related articles for media and outreach
  4. Attend weekly staff meetings and take office notes

 

Secondary Responsibilities:

  1. Collect trash within preserves and along public roads adjacent to TILT properties
  2. Work with volunteers on various projects as needed
  3. Assist with all aspects of summer fundraising events

Qualifications:

  1. Professional attitude and demeanor
  2. Highly motivated and responsible
  3. Regular and consistent attendance
  4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  5. Attention to detail
  6. Ability to work independently and with a team
  7. Facility with reading and interpretation of surveys, assessors and topographical maps
  8. Interest in land conservation and management
  9. Interest in ecology of the 1000 Islands region and St. Lawrence River
  10. Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation and a good driving record
  11. Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel

Working Conditions:

The Summer Land Steward will work outdoors and participate in trail walks and trail maintenance. Activities will occur on varied terrain and in variable weather conditions. Knowledge of the St. Lawrence River and boating experience is a plus.

Dates, hours and compensation:

The Summer Land Steward will work approximately 35 to 40 hours a week for 12 weeks between June and August. Exact start and end dates are flexible. Some weekend and evening hours are required. Some local travel is required. Wages will be based on skills and experience.
